– The Orlando Solar Bears
announced today that forwards Mathieu Melanson, David Lun, Brad Townsend, and Darick Ste-Marie, and defensemen Michael Jordan will attend training camp on Professional Tryout contracts. Forward Derrick Burnett comes into camp on an Amateur Tryout contract. The Solar Bears have also announced their Training Camp Schedule.
Melanson, (6’1″, 1998 lbs.) has spent parts of three separate seasons in the ECHL with Stockton, Florida, Phoenix, and Mississippi. During the 2007-08 season, the Shediac, New Brunswick, native led the Florida Everblades with 28 goals in 52 games while finishing third on the team in points with 58. He played eight games that season for the Manitoba Moose of the AHL (American Hockey League), scoring one goal. He was second to current Orlando Solar Bears forward Ryan Cruthers in goals, assists, and points while playing for the Mississippi Sea Wolves in the 2008-09 season. Drafted in the eighth round by the Minnesota Wild in 2003, Melanson has played in 121 ECHL games, tallying 147 points on 72 goals and 75 assists. He has been named the ECHL’s Player of the Week on two separate occasions, once in February and again in November in 2008.
Lun (5’11″, 194 lbs.) gathered 42 points on 14 goals and 28 assists with the Cape Cod Bluefins of the FHL (Federal Hockey League) last season, his first as a professional. The Grand Rapids, Michigan, native played 81 games over the course of four years with UMass-Boston from 2007-11, collecting 28 points to go along with 106 PIM.
Townsend (5’11″, 183 lbs.) split the 2011-12 season between the 1000 Islands Privateers and the Danville Dashers, both of the FHL. In 16 games, he had nine goals and four assists for 13 points. From Davisburg, Michigan, Townsend played in one ECHL game with the Cincinnati Cyclones in 2010-11.
Ste-Marie (6′, 196 lbs.) began last season with the Vermont Wild (FHL) before joining the Danville Dashers (FHL). He had 10 goals and 14 assists in 22 games, and also earned a 10 game call-up to the Cincinnati Cyclones where he posted four points, all assists.
Jordan (5’10″, 165 lbs.) competed in the FHL (Federal Hockey League), SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League, and CHL (Central Hockey League) last season. From Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, he competed in the AAHL (All American Hockey League) for three seasons (2008-11), collecting 36 points (18 goals, 18 assists) in 36 games.
Burnett (6’2″, 185 lbs.) enters his first professional season after completing a four-year career with Air Force Academy (NCAA). Last year, the Corona, California, native posted 35 points (eight goals, 27 assists) in 36 games. He led his team in assists and finished second in points in each of the last two seasons, and in 149 games at Air Force Burnett collected 33 goals and 85 assists for 118 points.
