SOLAR BEARS HELP LAUNCH HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY LEAGUE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

League Promotes Growth and Awareness of Hockey in Community

Orlando, FL – The Orlando Solar Bears announced today that they have partnered with the Central Florida High School Hockey League (CFHSHL) in promoting and developing high school hockey in the Central Florida. The student-athletes playing in the CFHSHL will register with USA Hockey and will follow its rules.

“The Central Florida High School Hockey League Board of Directors and Coaches are very excited to partner with the Orlando Solar Bears,” said Julio Guerra, President of the CFHSHL. “The relationship aligns the goals of both organizations by expanding the great sport of ice hockey in our community. CFHSHL’s Inaugural 2013 season will see seven (7) regional teams and over 100 student-athletes High School Hockeycompeting from Seminole, Orange, Brevard, Volusia, Osceola, Lake, Duval and other counties. We anticipate rapid growth and are grateful to have the Solar Bears involvement and support.”

To aid new and prospective players with the initial start-up expenses, the Central Florida High School Hockey League made the entry fee reasonable, and will provide equipment swaps and inexpensive skills clinics. The Solar Bears are providing jerseys and socks for the teams. The Orange and Seminole County jerseys will sport the CFHSHL logo crest with the Solar Bears logo on the upper right chest. The league continues the growth of high school hockey in Florida by establishing the Solar Bears Conference to join with South Florida‘s Panthers Conference and the Lightning Conference in Tampa Bay. The majority of the games will be played at the Solar Bears practice facility, the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den in Orlando, and the seven teams in the conference will compete for the Solar Bears Championship Cup. The Championship Game is scheduled to be played on Saturday, June 22.

“We have a long list of community based goals and objectives, with the growth of youth hockey right there at the top of that list,” said Solar Bears Managing Partner, Jason Siegel.  “Our involvement and sponsorship of High School Hockey along with our participation in youth ‘house leagues’ at RDV, SpaceCoast, and Daytona represents another step toward achieving those goals. Youth hockey participation has grown incrementally this past season since the Solar Bears first took the ice back in October of 2012 and this League will provide yet another outlet to showcase the talent of these high school-aged student-athletes.”

The CFHSHL completed a “pilot” season last year featuring 75 high school students residing in five different counties surrounding Orlando. This number is expected to grow to over 100 participants this year, with the eventual goal to see each high school have the ability to field a team exclusively made up of their own students. In turn this will increase the awareness, participation, and accessibility of hockey in Central Florida.

Student-athletes from 38 different High Schools will skate in the CFHSHL: Apopka, Atlantic, Berkshire, Bishop Kenny, Boone, Connections Academy, Crooms, DeLand, Deltona Christian, Dr. Phillips, East Ridge, Eustis, Father Lopez, Fleming Island, FLVS, Freedom, Hagerty, Lake Brantley, Lake Highland Prep, Lake Mary, Lake Nona, Lyman, Mainland, Mandarin, Monteverde Academy, Oviedo, Pace Brantley, Phantom Trail, Seminole, Seminole Virtual, Spruce Creek, St. Cloud, Timber Creek, University, Weikva, West Orange, Winter Park, and Yulee High.

WILD AHL AFFILIATE MOVING TO IOWA

Solar Bears Affiliation Continues with Minnesota, Iowa

Orlando, FL – The Wild announced today that its American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate will relocate from Houston, Texas, to Des Moines, Iowa, beginning with the 2013-14 season.

“Our organization has enjoyed tremendous support from the loyal, passionate hockey fans in Houston since 2001,” Wild Assistant to the General Manager/Aeros General Manager Jim Mill said. “There is a great hockey history in Houston, beginning with the Apollos in 1965, and continuing with the Aeros in the WHA, IHL and AHL. We are honored to have been a part of this hockey tradition.”

“We are grateful to our corporate and community partners, as well as our hard-working staff in Houston,” Mill added.

“We were informed today that the Wild are moving their AHL affiliate to Des Moines,” said Orlando Solar Bears COO Bob Ohrablo. “As we continue our affiliation with the Minnesota Wild, affiliated players recalled to the AHL will now play with Des Moines.”

“We were not able to find agreement on terms of a new arena lease which would allow us to continue to successfully operate our franchise. We thank Toyota Center for the partnership we’ve had since moving there in 2003,” Wild Chief Operating Officer Matt Majka said.

“We have enjoyed a very strong relationship with the Aeros dating back to Toyota Center’s inaugural 2003 season. Both parties worked diligently and in good faith during this process, but unfortunately we were unable to reach an agreement. We wish the Aeros continued success,” Houston Rockets/Clutch City Sports & Entertainment CEO Tad Brown said.

Duluth, GA -  The Solar Bears came back to tie the game at 1-1 and again at 2-2, but were unable to take the lead and eventually fell to the Gladiators 3-2 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Gladiators got on the board first with a late first period power play. After the puck was dumped into the Orlando end, the Gladiators forced a turnover and gave F Andy Brandt a chance to collect the loose puck. Brandt fired a shot into the top left Corbin Baldwincorner of the net at 18:04 to put Gwinnett ahead 1-0. The Solar Bears answered 29 seconds later, when F Michael Neal bounced a pass off the left wall, springing F Nick McParland on a 2-on-1 rush. After neither side was able to score in the middle frame, the Gladiators snapped the 1-1 tie in the third. F Doug Jones stickhandled into the slot and slid a shot past G Patrick Killeen to give Gwinnett the 2-1 lead. McParland struck back for Orlando at 5:39, when he potted his second goal of the night on a pass from F Brett Hartung to even the score at 2-2. Duluth, GAThe Gladiators jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Solar Bears and held them off the scoresheet for the majority of the contest to eventually take a 3-1 win over the Solar Bears at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday night.

The Gladiators jumped out to an early lead 7:28 into the first period. After a Derick Martincross-ice pass was deflected away, D Cody Brookwell blasted a shot from the point that was partially blocked, but found a way to trickle over the line to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. The Gladiators increased their lead to 2-0 just 36 seconds later, when a shot from the right corner off the stick of F Justin Bowers deflected underneath the crossbar and gave Gwinnett the two goal lead going into the second period.

Exactly 5:00 into the second stanza, F Scott Arnold increased the advantage for Gwinnett. Arnold collected the puck in the neutral zone, rolled it on goal, and got his own rebound before tucking the puck into the back of net to put Gwinnett up 3-0. It was the lone goal of the frame.

The score remained 3-0 until late in the third period. With G Patrick Killeen pulled from the net for an extra attacker, a shot from D Derick Martin hit traffic in front of the Gladiators net, popped up in the air, and landed behind G Louie Domingue to put the Solar Bears on the board with 53 seconds left in the game. It would not be enough for the Solar Bears, as the Gladiators held on to take the 3-1 win over Orlando.

Power Plays: ORL: 0/5; GWT: 0/4

Orlando Has Played 13 of last 14 Games at Home

Orlando, FL – The Orlando Solar Bears held the ‘BE GREAT! Classic for Kids’ on Saturday, March 2, raising over $6,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida.

The first week of the home stretch of games was highlighted on February 2, when 8,650 Solar Bears fans were in attendance as Orlando honored the Turner Cup Championship team from the 2000-01 season by raising the banner to the Amway Center rafters. That night, C Mathew Sisca scored 1:04 in the contest and forward C.J. Severyn collected four points (1 goal, 3 assists) to help Orlando down the CrowdTitans 6-4.

Orlando eclipsed the 7,000 fan mark again just two games later, on February 8, when 7,242 fans turned out to see the Solar Bears erase a 3-0 second period deficit to overcome the Florida Everblades with a 4-3 shootout victory. F Ryan Ginand led the charge offensively for Orlando with a goal and an assist in the game.

The following weekend the Solar Bears held Faith and Family Weekend in three games against the South Carolina Stingrays from Friday, February 15, through Sunday, February 17. A total of 21,023 fans came out over the three game set, with 8,590 people in attendance on Saturday night. Three live bands played during the weekend, as Stria performed on Friday, Group 1 Crew took the stage on Saturday, and Good Luck Penny closed out the weekend on Sunday. Season ticket holders were invited to step on the Amway Center ice after Sunday’s game for a Skate with the Team event, as well as get autographs from Solar Bears players on the concourse.

Fans turned out in high numbers once again on Friday, February 22, to see Orlando battle a South Division rival, the Gwinnett Gladiators. That night, 7,448 fans witnessed a 4-2 win for Orlando over the division leader, while also seeing C Ryan Cruthers score his 20th goal of the season with a shorthanded tally late in the final period.

The home stretch came to a close last weekend, as the third largest crowd of the year of 8,819 people watched the Solar Bears match up against the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Reading Royals. Before the game, the Solar Bears hosted the ‘BE GREAT! Classic for Kids’ that saw seven-time Stanley Cup champion Bryan Trottier, Solar Bears Head Coach and veteran of 549 NHL games Drake Berehowsky, and former Solar Bears and NHL-ers Allan Bester and Bob Joyce hit the ice with local Orlando players.

When the homestand ended, 86,391 fans had come out to see the Solar Bears, for an average attendance of 6,645 people. A total of 53,019 were in attendance over the seven Friday and Saturday dates, for an average of 7,574 people at the weekend games.

“We want to thank all of the fans who have come out to Amway Center to celebrate the return of the Solar Bears so far this season,” said Chief Operating Office/Managing Partner Bob Ohrablo.  “Our fans have created an incredible atmosphere inside the Amway Center each and every night.”

The Solar Bears embark on a six game road trip before starting a final five game regular season home stretch beginning with a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration game on Wednesday, March 20th against the Greenville Road Warriors, who also provide the competition for the Thursday, March 21st home game.  The home stand continues on Sunday, March 24th against Cincinnati and concludes with a pair of games against arch rivals, the Florida Everblades on Spring Break Week-Tuesday, March 26th and Wednesday, March 27th.

Orlando, FL -  The Solar Bears battled the Eastern Conference-leading Reading Royals to a 3-3 tie after two periods of play, but penalty trouble doomed them to an 8-3 loss in front of 8,819 fans at the Amway Center on Saturday night.

An action packed first period saw the Solar Bears open up the scoring 5:45 into the game. C Ryan Cruthers took a pass from C Mathew Sisca and snapped a shot over C.J. Severynthe shoulder of G Riley Gill on the power play to give Orlando a 1-0 lead. The Solar Bears increased their advantage to 2-0 when Sisca turned and fired a pass to  forward C.J. Severn, and Severyn redirected the puck into the cage at 8:33. Reading came storming right back in the middle portion of the period, starting when F Yannick Tifu got loose in the low slot, made a quick deke to his backhand, and beat G Zoltan Hetenyi at 9:41 of the period. The Royals knotted the game up at 2-2 exactly one minute later, when F Joel Champaign whipped a puck off the right post and into the net. Orlando regained their lead with 5:29 left in the frame, when F Michael Neal moved a pass to Sisca, who sent a one-touch pass to F Ryan Ginand on the right side. Ginand fired a one-timer off the pass to finish off a beautiful play and give the Solar Bears a 3-2 lead going into the first intermission.

Once again, the Royals evened up the contest. 11:11 into the second period, Tifu struck for his second goal of the night when he found a rebound during a delayed penalty and slammed it home. The Royals had an opportunity to take a lead with a penalty shot awarded to F David Marshall, but Hetenyi snagged the shot with his glove to keep it tied and the two sides finished 40 minutes of action locked in a 3-3 score.

The Royals came out hard in the third, breaking the tie game with a power play marker from D Brock Shelgren 1:44 into the period. Reading would go on to score four more times in the period, as F Ethan Cox scored less than a minute later and Tifu polished off his hat trick while F Stanislav Galiev scored twice on the power play for the final 8-3 score.

North Charleston, SC – Solar Bears Captain C Ryan Cruthers extended his goal streak to four games, notching his 100th ECHL goal in the process, but Orlando fell 9-3 to the South Carolina Stingrays at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday night.

For the second straight game, Orlando was able to knock home the first goal of the contest. Towards the tail-end a power play, D Ryan Blair held a puck at the blue Ryan Cruthersline and found C Ryan Cruthers, who skated in unobstructed along the right side of the slot and snapped a shot into the top right corner of the net at 8:59, giving the Solar Bears a 1-0 lead.

Only 30 seconds into the second frame, South Carolina evened the score up at 1-1. A shot from F Robby Dee was stopped was G Patrick Killeen, but it trickled through his pads and F Hunter Bishop tapped the puck over the line to even up the score. At 11:43, South Carolina tool the lead when a cross-crease pass from D Scooter Vaughn bounced off the skates of F Chris Langkow and into the back of the net. Just 26 seconds after that, Dee put the Stingrays ahead 3-1 when he one-timed a shot off a pass from Bishop, and D Colby Cohen finished the second period scoring by blasting home a power play goal from the blue line with 1.2 seconds remaining in the frame as the Stingrays led 4-1 after two.

The two teams traded goals at the start of the third period, with Dee notching his second of the night at 3:03 and F Michael Neal answering for the Solar Bears with a great individual effort, stick-handling through three players and putting the puck in the top corner of the net to answer 54 seconds later. Vaughn then struck at 7:16 to put South Carolina ahead 6-2, with C Mathew Sisca answering for Orlando once again less than a minute later. The Solar Bears were then issued a rash of penalty calls at 10:59 of the period, leading to a 5-on-3 goal and two 5-on-4 markers for South Carolina as they skated away with the win.

SOLAR BEARS TO BID ON 2015 ECHL ALL-STAR GAME
Nick Petersen Selected as First Solar Bears All-Star Representative
for 2013 Game in Colorado

Orlando, FL – On January 22 and 23, the Colorado Eagles and Loveland, Colorado, will host the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game and ECHL mid-season meetings. During those League meetings, the ownership group for the Orlando Solar Bears has announced that they will notify the ECHL Board of Governors that they will submit a bid this summer to host the 2015 ECHL All-Star Game during the League’s 27th season.

“Orlando’s ownership and staff has done a tremendous job in the team’s first season, averaging over 6,500 fans per game to rank third in the ECHL. The League looks forward to receiving the Solar Bears’ bid to bring our showcase event to Central Florida in 2015,” said Commissioner Brian McKenna.

“With an award winning facility and the tremendous support of our local community, season ticket holders, corporate sponsors and growing fan base here in Orlando, we will make a compelling bid to host one of our League signature events, the 2015 All-Star Game,” said team President and Alternate Governor, Jason Siegel. “We will spend the next three months assembling a group of community leaders and partners to help us present what we believe will be a winning bid to the ECHL Board of Governors in June.”

“We built the award-winning Amway Center to host national and international events with a vast array of fan amenities which makes Orlando the ideal place to host the 2015 ECHL All-Star Game,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.  “In just their first season, the Orlando Solar Bears have already become an integral part of our city and hosting the ECHL All-Star game would be good for the Solar Bears and all of Central Florida.”

“What a tremendous opportunity to showcase the Amway Center and Central Florida to hockey fans throughout the country as we continue to draw more and more fans to downtown Orlando,”  said Solar Bears COO, Bob Ohrablo.

Nick Petersen becomes the first player in Solar Bears history to be selected to the ECHL All-Star Game

Nick PetersenThe Wakefield, Quebec, native has played in 22 games for Orlando this season, scoring 12 goals and adding 14 assists for 26 points. Petersen notched the first hat  trick for the Solar Bears against the South Carolina Stingrays on October 25, and leads Orlando in goals while being tied for first in points. He is currently on recall to the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League, where he has scored one goal and added one assist in six games.

The ECHL All-Star Game

More than 50 players from the ECHL All-Star Game have gone on to play in the National Hockey League, including 39 since 2002 when the lineups began having players who coaches felt were prospects to move up to a higher level. The game has been available on the NHL Network the last nine years as well as being broadcast on multiple regional networks. The audio broadcast has been carried on XM Satellite Radio as well as being available in all ECHL markets.

The past nine ECHL All-Star Games have generated more than $1 million each for the local economy as guests, players, coaches and fans occupy hundreds of hotel rooms and spend three days in the host city.   The game has been available on the NHL Network the last nine years as well as being broadcast on multiple regional networks. The audio broadcast has been carried on XM Satellite Radio as well as being available in all ECHL markets.

The ECHL is currently in the middle of its 25th season of play, and is the third longest tenured professional hockey league behind on the American Hockey League (AHL) and National Hockey League (NHL). The league has seen 298 players reach the NHL since 2003, when it changed its focus to become the primary developmental league for the NHL and AHL. The league had a record 81 former players on NHL opening-day rosters in 2011-12, and was represented for the 12th season in a row on the Stanley Cup in 2012 with Los Angeles Kings players Dwight King, Jordan Nolan, and Jonathan Quick. Quick would also win the Conn Smyth Trophy for playoff MVP, becoming the second-straight former ECHL player to win that award (Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins won the award in 2011).

The Orlando Solar Bears, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild and AHL’s Houston Aeros, play all of their home games at the 2012 Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal Sports Facility of the Year, the Amway Center.

“He just told me that this is already one of the best nights of his life,” Alicia said while smiling and trying to hold back tears.

Jeremiah, an Altamonte Springs native, was recently a guest of the Magic when they defeated Golden State for one of the team’s best home victories of the season. Jeremiah, a seventh-grader who is already 5-foot-11 and has aspirations of playing basketball, has already survived one brain tumor and last month was diagnosed with a terminal cancer in his skull.

Getting to meet his favorite basketball player, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, slapping hands with the players before the game in the high-five line, getting an autographed jersey and watching a Magic victory brightened Jeremiah’s spirits for one day at least.

“I am having a lot of fun. I’m kind of used to coming to games here, but it’s still so much fun for me,” Jeremiah said. “I’ve never had someone do something like this for me before and I love the Magic. Plus, I’ve never met a professional basketball player and my dream is to be in the NBA. I want to grow up to be 6-7 hopefully some day.”

Jeremiah’s story is one of great courage, faith and perseverance. In 2005, Jeremiah, then six years old, was diagnosed with a Grade 3 cancerous brain tumor and given six months to live. Later that month, Jeremiah stood up at his church and declared to the congregation that he thought his body would be healed by God.

Jeremiah ultimately defied the prognosis given to him by doctors, miraculously growing to be almost 6-foot tall and living seven years as a cancer-free teenager.

However in October, Jeremiah was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his skull, a secondary brain tumor that stemmed from the radiation that he received in the past for the previous cancer. Doctors believe that this cancer is terminal, but Jeremiah has vowed to continue his fight. He has remained in good spirits despite going through weekly seizures, chemotherapy treatments and being regularly in and out of the hospital.

“His spirits are actually very good. He actually does a good job of helping me keep my spirits up,” Alicia said. “I sometimes think it’s harder on me because I know what (the cancer treatments) all entail and I try to shelter him from everything that is going on. But his spirits are high. Sometimes he gets a little down going into the hospital because it’s not his favorite place to be, but other than that he’s been a very good sport about it.’’

Jeremiah used to play basketball for hours at a time, using his size inside to dominate. He said that’s why he became a fan of “Big Baby” Davis last season because of his gritty, hard-nosed style.

“I like that he’s a big guy and he’s tough enough to get rebounds,” Jeremiah said. “When I played I would do the same thing. I like to post up and take it to the hole.”

Jeremiah is home-schooled these days because he is in the hospital every two weeks because of chemotherapy treatments. When he’s around sisters Kalia (16) and Jaleah (7) and brother Isaiah (10), Jeremiah is the jokester and the most likely to tell a joke. And he rarely misses a Magic game, calling Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick his other favorite players.

Alicia said she couldn’t thank the Magic enough for making her son feel special for a night and at least temporarily take his mind off his health concerns.

“It’s hard with Jeremiah’s condition, but by the grace of God we’re going to get through this,” Alicia vowed. “It really helps a lot, getting to come to a Magic game like this. At home, when his brothers and sisters go out and play, he really has to kind of stay confined to the house. I just don’t let him out of my sights much because of everything that is going on with his condition. So when he can get out and do fun things like this it really helps. We’re so grateful to the Magic for this.”
