Time to take Action!
Dear Brazilian friends, good afternoon. It was a pleasure to spend time with all of you at the Breakfast and/or Business After Hours of the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce. I encourage you to join me to call Florida House and Senate to pass a sales tax rebate legislation that will help us to build a new soccer stadium and compete to obtain a Major League Soccer franchise. Please, read the letter below.
Obrigado!
Luis M.
Mayor Dyer and the City of Orlando are working hard to secure a Major League Soccer franchise for Florida. Opportunities to add a top tier professional sports franchise to the state are very rare, and cities from across the country are competing with Florida right now for the economic investment and exciting quality-of-life amenity that a professional sports franchise can offer.
Due to the rapid growth in soccer’s popularity, MLS has publically announced expansion of their league with a desire to have a team located in Orlando. MLS’s possible expansion into Florida will depend on the selected cities being able to build soccer-ready stadiums for their expansion team. To help fund a soccer-ready stadium, the City is seeking legislation from the State of Florida that would provide a sales tax rebate for the stadium. This funding is no different than what is currently offered to all other major league sports teams in Florida.
There are only seven days left in the 2013 session in Tallahassee, but legislation to give MLS equal standing with the other professional sports leagues in Florida is currently stalled in the Florida House of Representatives.
If legislation does not get passed this year it is likely MLS will choose to locate their expansion team in Atlanta rather than in Orlando. This means Orlando and the entire State of Florida will lose the opportunity to create new jobs, generate additional international travel, especially from Brazil, and highlight Florida to the millions of international fans that make soccer the most popular sport in the world.
We need YOU, along with your co-workers, friends and family, to help break through the logjam. Below is information on how to contact Speaker Weatherford’s office along with additional background on the impact Major League Soccer would have here in Orlando and across our region and state.
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP – PLEASE TAKE THIS ACTION NOW OR FIRST THING TOMORROW!
Please call and email House Speaker Will Weatherford and Senate President Don Gaetz’s office using the number and email link below
Speaker Weatherford

WHY MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER?
In the past decade, Major League Soccer (MLS) has quickly surpassed other professional sports in popularity, boasting higher attendance than both the NBA and NHL – and surprisingly MLS doesn’t have any teams in the Southeast region of the country.
Orlando and Florida are competing for an expansion team with cities like New York, Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Minneapolis.
Flavio Augusto da Silva, a Brazilian businessman, recently acquired the majority ownership interest in Orlando City Soccer and is looking to bring thousands of international soccer fans and their economic impact to Central Florida’s front door. This also positions Orlando to become the U.S. soccer destination for all Latino soccer fans.
The hospitality industry remains the backbone of Central Florida’s economy and international travel is critical to ensuring the economic growth of Central Florida. Take for example, in 2009, when TAM airlines added a direct flight from Saó Paulo, Brazil to Orlando, the Mall at Millenia and the Prime Outlet Malls immediately saw double digit increases in sales.
We have the rare opportunity for a second major league professional sports franchise to call Orlando home and if we don’t seize this opportunity now we could lose it forever.
ABOUT THE LEGISLATION:
The primary bill being discussed is Senate Bill 306, relating to economic development – though other bills in both chambers propose various development incentives for professional sports development in Florida.
The legislation would treat MLS like all other professional sports leagues for purposes of a sales tax rebate to help finance the construction of a soccer-specific stadium in downtown Orlando.
The sales tax rebate comes from new sales tax revenues generated by the new stadium – it does not redirect existing sales tax revenues.
The legislation being proposed adds new accountability measures to the existing rebate program.
This new legislation ensures that the economic activity promised is actually achieved.
Thank you,
Luis M. Martinez-Alicea

Specialized Children and Baby Stores Drive Growth in Brazil’s Booming Baby and Children Products Market
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reports that around five babies are born per minute in Brazil. Taking into consideration this Brazilian market research, a middle-class family spends approximately US$3,000 for baby clothing alone for the first year of the child’s life.
In Brazil, the market for maternity, babies and children’s products and services is developing rapidly. For this reason, Brazilian manufacturers and suppliers are aware of this opportunity and they want to grasp and take hold of this niche market. They are now increasingly focused on launching specialized stores, offering products and services capitalizing on this market.
The megastore model, where the customer used to find all kinds of baby products in only one place, gave way to specialized companies such as baby furniture stores, baby clothing and accessories. This new shape of business is making the children’s market grow in all regions of the country, offering a distinguished service with a great value added to the product. Continue reading

That picture-postcard image of lush green hillsides, blue tropical skies and golden beaches has ensured that millions of tourists flock to Brazil every year to enjoy sipping a caipirinha on the iconic Copacabana beach. The city’s popularity means that Rio is busy all year round, but there’s one time of year when booking in advance is more than just a recommendation, and that is the famous Rio Carnival. With just over two weeks to go, hotels for the 2013 Carnival are already at close to 99% occupancy, so if you haven’t booked your accommodation yet, you’d better get on the case!
There are two factors conspiring to make it difficult to be sure of getting a good hotel room during Carnival. The first is quite simple and it’s that the Rio Carnival is the biggest party on earth! Quite apart from all the Brazilians flocking to Rio, you also have literally hundreds of thousands of overseas visitors travelling to Brazil to enjoy everything from the glamorous parades in the Sambadrome to the impromptu street parties that many say are the real spirit of Carnival.
The second thing which makes hotel availability for Carnival so tricky is that although Rio is a big city, everyone wants to be in just a handful of areas. The natural geography of Rio means that areas are spread out and separated by lakes, hills and the ocean itself, and very few places tick all the boxes for a carnival visitor. As Dan Clarke from Real Brazil (www.therealbrazil.com) explains: “More than any other city in Brazil, Rio is all about location, and that’s especially true at Carnival. Being in the right area can make all the difference between having a perfect Carnival experience, and just getting frustrated.”
Firstly, getting taxis during carnival can be difficult and so to get to and from the Sambadrome you really want to be near a Metro station. The Metro in Rio is great, where it runs, but it’s not hugely extensive so that can exclude some areas which otherwise are quite appealing. You also want to be somewhere that’s going to be safe and have a good choice of restaurants and shops. Finally, after a hard night’s partying, you’re going to want some relaxation space and in Rio that means you want to be near the beach.
Put it all together and there are really only two areas that make sense. As Dan says: “Although at other times of year we might suggest a couple of other places, for Carnival we really only recommend Ipanema and Copacabana, where you’re on the Metro, you’ve got the beach and you’ve got all the other facilities you might need.” Unfortunately, the same elimination process means that everyone else has figured the same thing out, so if you want to be in the right place, you’d better get your hotel booked quickly!

When You Wish Starts Operations In Brazil
American website for funding creative, business, and social projects launches in Brazil.
When You Wish is a leading Internet “crowdfunding” startup that combines payment processing and publishing tools so everyone can easily raise money online for their ideas or causes. “There are 200 million people in Brazil including a fast growing middle class. I’ve spent a good deal of my life in Brazil, and I can tell you the dream of starting up a business or funding a creative pursuit is just as potent there as it is here in the U.S.”, says Dave Harvilicz, co-founder and CEO of When You Wish. That notion has been validated by the recent flood of Brazilian media attention garnered by the site in such high-profile publications as G1, Exame.com, Isto é Dinheiro and Jornal O Globo.
Crowdfunding is revolutionizing fundraising in America by successfully funding everything from Sundance film festival movies to the production of must-have smartphone accessories. When You Wish has championed a concept it has coined “Indie Capitalism.” Both When You Wish and the people who use the site to raise money are betting on duplicating that success in Brazil. For example, Diego Porqueras raised over $160,000 in his American crowdfunding campaign for his open-source desktop 3D printer called Bukobot. While there are several desktop 3D printers available in the U.S., when it launches on When You Wish Brasil, Bukobot will be the first desktop 3D printer to be available to Brazilians.
According to Gartner, the crowdfunding industry is expected to raise over $6.2 billion in 2013. When You Wish hopes to become the leading solution for crowdfunding in Brazil, by offering unique features not found on any other crowdfunding website. They’ve hired Rafael Chaves as Brazil country manager. “It’s an amazing platform. Not only can you donate cash to a project you can also contribute goods or services. It’s a game changer for artists, entrepreneurs, social activists, or anyone else that does fundraising,” adds Chaves.
About When You Wish
Based in Venice Beach, California, and founded in February 2011, http://www.whenyouwish.com is one of the oldest and fastest-growing crowdfunding websites online today. The company is exploring future expansion to other countries including Spanish-speaking Latin America, Russia, India, and China. Its board of advisors is comprised of leaders in their respective fields and includes: John Mackey (Whole Foods), Zelda Marzec (Los Angeles-based investment advisor), Charlie Annenberg (Annenberg Foundation), Drew Nicholson (Intel Corporation), and Carl Esposti (CrowdSourcing.org).
