The U.S. Postal Service commemorated the 100th anniversary of a New York City landmark by dedicating the Grand Central Terminal Express Mail stamp in the Main Concourse, under the constellation ceiling.
Available nationwide today, customers may purchase the new $19.95 stamp at usps.com/stamps, by phone at 800-STAMP24 (800-782-6724) or at a local Post Office. The stamp is good for mailing Express Mail Flat Rate Envelopes, Express Mail Padded Flat Envelopes and Express Mail Legal Flat Rate Envelopes.
“This beautiful stamp captures both the universal appeal and excitement of travel, and the architectural grandeur that is uniquely New York,” said U.S. Postal Service Northeast Area Vice President Richard P. Uluski while dedicating the stamp. “We issue the stamp today on the 100-year anniversary of the official opening of Grand Central Terminal when it began its reign as one of the most majestic public spaces in the world.”
The stamp captures the grandeur of the terminal’s architecture with an illustration of the Main Concourse. Early morning sunlight streams through the 60-foot-tall windows, illuminating the people below. In the foreground, travelers gather near the terminal’s round information booth topped with its four-sided clock. The edges of the terminal’s famous sky ceiling can be seen at the top of the stamp art, its background decorated with a mural of constellations and figures of the Zodiac.
World’s Largest Railway Terminal
Grand Central Terminal officially opened Feb. 2, 1913, and was soon recognized and hailed as the largest and greatest railway terminal in the world. The terminal encompasses nearly 48 acres on two levels (two and a half times the size of New York’s Pennsylvania Station) and has 42 passenger platform tracks, twice as many as Penn Station’s 21 platform tracks and more than twice as many as the 19 at Boston’s South Station and the 16 at St. Louis’ Union Station.
Within the terminal building, separate concourses were provided for incoming and outgoing long-distance trains and suburban trains to avoid friction between opposing flows of passengers, who reached the different levels of the underground terminal using ramps. The station has been able to efficiently handle enormous growth over the years with virtually no major structural changes.
Grand Central Terminal played a pivotal role during the heyday of rail travel, serving both New York’s suburban trains and long-distance trains like the 20th Century Limited, a favorite of celebrities and movie stars. But by the 1950s, rail travel was declining. New York’s other great train station, Penn Station, fell to the wrecking ball in 1963. The event galvanized those who wanted to save Grand Central from a similar fate, including prominent New Yorkers such as Jacqueline Kennedy.
Although the terminal was eventually spared, in the years that followed, billboards, decades of grime and a leaking roof marred its beauty. Grand Central was rescued a second time with a series of renovations, culminating in a rededication celebration Oct. 1, 1998.

Michael Kors is proud to announce its exclusive, long-term partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme, dedicated to helping solve the international hunger crisis, a cause that is the cornerstone of Kors’ philanthropic platform.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has been providing much-needed food assistance to vulnerable people, particularly mothers and children, around the world for 50 years. The organization works in more than 70 countries and feeds 90 million people annually, making it the largest organization fighting hunger around the world. As an extension of the United Nations, it provides emergency and developmental assistance to eliminate hunger and food-insecurity in the world’s poorest countries. In partnering with WFP, Michael Kors hopes to raise awareness and funds that will help to eradicate what WFP has deemed “the world’s most solvable problem.”
“I am so proud to be joining the World Food Programme in one of the greatest global fights of our time-the battle to end hunger,” said Kors. “Over the years, I’ve had the great fortune of traveling the world and experiencing new cultures and people. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that millions of people all over the world are struggling to feed themselves, and their families, every day. I want to lend my voice and my efforts to this international cause.”
In support of this goal to eliminate hunger, Michael Kors has committed to raising millions of dollars over the next few years through a combination of awareness-focused campaigns, special events and limited-edition fundraising products. The major goal of the partnership is to shed light on the continuing plight of the world’s hungry and to raise awareness throughout the fashion and global communities.
In January 2013, Michael Kors will release a public service announcement, set to air across the brand’s social media channels. The PSA features notable figures from the worlds of fashion, film and music, each stating a statistic to raise hunger crisis awareness throughout the fashion and global communities. In March, the company will launch two unisex watch styles for its “WATCH HUNGER STOP” campaign. For each watch sold, 100 children will be fed via the World Food Programme. There will also be a text-to-donate initiative to further fundraising efforts.
“We look forward to working with Michael Kors. Together, we will generate more attention as well as much needed resources in support of WFP’s efforts to end world hunger,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin. “Our vision of the future is a world where every person has access to the quality and quantity of food required to not only lead a healthy life, but to also reach his or her full human potential.”
The new partnership with WFP is a significant milestone in Kors’ mission to eradicate hunger on both a local and global scale. In October 2012, Mr. Kors made a $5 million donation to God’s Love We Deliver, the New York-based non-profit organization that cooks and delivers individually tailored meals daily to people living with severe illnesses throughout New York City, Newark and Hudson County. This gift enabled the God’s Love We Deliver team to continue its life-affirming work and conduct a major renovation of its facility in SoHo, which will be renamed “The Michael Kors Building.” Following his contribution, Kors was honored with the 2012 Golden Heart Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Golden Heart Awards Dinner.

New York City’s fashionable Park Avenue, known for the “Rich & Famous and Flixy Cats?” Max and the Flixy Cats are wowed by Park Avenue, expressed on Max’s face, the largest painted mural in NYC
Once upon a time in the 1800s, Park Avenue was named Fourth Avenue that once carried the New York Rail Road. As time moved quickly, some of the train tracks were sunk and portions of the boulevard were renamed Park Avenue due to the green, park-like landscape around the railroad tracks.
The building of Grand Central Station in 1927 made it possible for cars to cruise Park and Forth Avenue. By 1956, all of Fourth Avenue, from 17th Street, to the remainder of its distance became known as Park Avenue. Continue reading
