Giving away two inches in height and some 20 pounds in weight when he got switched onto Thomas Robinson on Monday night, DeQuan Jones used his basketball smarts to reach in and tie up the Houston Rockets power forward and force a jump ball.

Then, in a situation few expected him to win because of the size difference, Jones shot off the floor like a rocket, out-jumped Robinson and forced a jump ball violation that won possession of the ball for the Orlando Magic.

It’s those kinds of scrappy plays that helped Jones overcome some of the greatest of odds and stick with the Magic this season. Now, after proving that he belongs in the NBA and earning a steady spot in the regular rotation, Jones has risen to starter status and is showing great promise for the future. Continue reading

Orlando Magic Youth Foundation Black Tie and Tennies Charity Gala Raises More Than $500k for the Central Florida Community

Jameer Nelson Wins 2012-13 Rich & Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award

Jameer Nelson Wins 2012-13 Rich & Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award

By John Denton, OrlandoMagic.com

Jameer Nelson Community Enrichment Award 2013_M149273When he had the chance to leave last summer via free agency, Jameer Nelson chose to stay in Orlando with the Magic. Nelson said not only could he not envision himself playing in another uniform, but he also didn’t want to leave a Magic fan base that has supported him for nine seasons

Nelson’s loyalty to the Magic and his commitment to the Orlando community were rewarded on Saturday night when he was named the winner of the 2012-13 Rich and Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award at the 23rdannual Orlando Magic Youth Foundation Black Tie & Tennies Gala presented by FAIRWINDS Credit Union.

The OMYF honors a player who has dedicated his efforts off the court for the purpose of enhancing other’s lives. A panel of external representatives selected Nelson as the winner. In addition to receiving the award, Nelson was granted $50,000 from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation to donate to the charity of his choice.

“It’s definitely an honor and it says a lot about what we’re about as an organization and a team and who Mr. (Rich) DeVos is as a person and what he does for the community,” Nelson said as he manned a photo booth along with fans during the gala.

It was the second time that Nelson has been a finalist for the award. Glen “Big Baby” Davis was also a finalist for Saturday night’s award. Legendary Magic owner Rich DeVos and Chairman Dan DeVos were on hand to present the Community Enrichment Award to Nelson. Rich DeVos told the crowd the story of how he and his wife wanted to reward a Magic player for giving back and how they received special permission from the NBA league office to be able to award the $50,000 prize for players to award to their charities.

The Black Tie and Tennies Gala is the biggest fundraiser for the OMYF. For a third straight year the OMYF gave out $1 million to 17 local nonprofit organizations throughout Central Florida.

Every dollar raised on Saturday night receives a 50-cent match through the McCormick Foundation Fund. Magic CEO Alex Martins put the hard sell on the 700 people at the event, coaxing them to use their smart phones to donate to the cause and ultimately $30,000 was raised on the spot. Another $42,500 was raised by auctioning off items such as dinner with Davis, a trip to the 2014 NBA All-Star Game, a trip to the ESPN ESPY award, a five-night stay in Paris for the LeCordon Blue Culinary Academy and four-night stay at Royal St. Andrews to play golf.

Other silent auctions and donations made the night a smashing success for the OMYF. Martins stressed that the Magic’s mission is to be champions on and off the court while striving to make a difference in people’s lives.

“The Orlando Magic are built to be a cornerstone of this community,” Martins said. “When the team succeeds, this community succeeds. And when a community succeeds, we are all winners. This philosophy permeates the entire organization, especially through our players. Our players understand the responsibility that they have not only on the court, but off. They know how many children look to them as role models and how important it is to be stewards of this great community.”

Nelson is the longest-tenured Magic player on the roster, spending his entire nine-year career in Orlando. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in assists (2,999). In 580 career games with the Magic, he has averaged 12.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a game. This season, he’s averaging 14.7 points – his highest total in four seasons – and 7.3 assists – the most of his career.

Nelson has consistently volunteered his time off the court and to the Central Florida community supporting the initiatives of the Magic’s community relations department, the OMYF and the NBA. Highlights of his community involvement for the 2012-13 season include:

  • ·         Helped feed more than 600 homeless men, women and children at the Magic’s Thanksgiving breakfast at the Coalition for the Homeless.
  • ·         Hosted a surprise event and provided holiday gifts for two local families of six affiliated with OCPS Homeless Division. Gifts for each family included laptops, cell phones, Nintendo DS system, games, toys, and gift cards for both families to purchase essential needs.
  • ·         Participated in pregame meet n’ greets with terminally ill children.
  • ·         Works with After School All-Stars in promoting comprehensive after school programs which assist disadvantaged youth in the community.
  • ·         Participated in the Player Ticket Program by purchasing over 600 tickets for children at Elevate Orlando to attend Magic home games.

“This is especially for the fans who see who we are as people,” Nelson said of winning the Community Enrichment Award. “When we go into the community for events, it’s great. It’s not about the money or anything; it’s more about the time and doing things in this community as people. Being able to do things for people it just an extra incentive for us.”

Past winners of the award include Nick Anderson (1995-1996), Penny Hardaway (1996-1997), Darrell Armstrong (1997-1998, 1999-2000), Grant Hill (2000-2001), Monty Williams (2001-2002), Tracy McGrady (2002-2003), Pat Garrity (2003-2004), Bo Outlaw (1998-1999, 2005-2006, 2006-2007), Dwight Howard (2004-05, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12) and J.J. Redick (2011-12).

Decked out in his blue No. 2 Kyle O’Quinn jersey and his black Orlando Magic hat, Tommie O’Quinn beamed with the pride of a proud parent as his son recorded several career highs in the same famous arena where the two of them used to come and watch NBA games a decade ago.

Then, like a flash of lightening, the incredible symmetry of what was transpiring Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden and what incredibly happened almost a year ago this week, hit the older O’Quinn.

“I didn’t know how to feel with him out there playing so well, but it made me think about Omaha, Nebraska, all over again,”  Tommie O’Quinn said, referring to his son’s big moment in the NCAA Tournament last March. “He got that double-double out there tonight against the (New York) Knicks and I just thought to myself, ‘There’s no stopping this kid.’ Continue reading

The event was part of an ongoing partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which assumed responsibility of the state’s school nutrition program in January 2012. The department works to improve the nutritional value of school meals, direct more locally-grown fresh fruits and vegetables and encourage kids to choose the healthy options available.  The department partners with teams across Florida who can carry the message that it’s important to eat right and stay active in order to compete in the classroom and on the field or court.

There is, quite possibly, no one on the Orlando Magic’s roster better to confirm the rebuilding plan that the organization has chosen to implement than Arron Afflalo, a veteran who could be looking for a door, but instead wholeheartedly wants to be a part of this massive Magic makeover.

At 27 years old and six years into his NBA career, Afflalo certainly wouldn’t be blamed if he wanted to flee for a team in the championship hunt before his prime years of basketball expire. Quite the contrary, says Afflalo, who covets his position now as a mentor for Orlando’s kiddie corps of five rookies and three second-year players. And he enjoys being the tough-minded veteran who the team looks to in time of need, such as Monday in New Orleans when Afflalo scored 11 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter to spark a 105-102 Magic victory Continue reading

Get to Know: Tobias Harris

Get to Know: Tobias Harris

By John Denton, OrlandoMagic.com

Link to story at OrlandoMagic.com,

Even now, as a 20-year-old, second-year NBA player, Tobias Harris can close his eyes and hear the voice of his father, Torrel Harris, who often pushed him so hard as a young player that he routinely contemplated giving up basketball.

Even with Harris firmly entrenched in the NBA, his father’s voice is never far away as the two talk after every NBA game. Torrel once played collegiately at Duquesne, later worked as an agent representing Hall of Famer George Gervin and has since poured his life into helping his son become a success in the NBA.

These days, Harris can chuckle at the long, winding road he’s been on to get to the NBA. And his father has been right there almost literally every step of the way, helping his son reach his dreams of playing basketball professionally.

“It was tough. I used to tell everybody that I probably quit basketball as a kid a hundred times because of how hard he was working me, but it all paid off,” Harris remembered. “That’s why my dad is so excited that I’m in the position that I am now. The hard work all paid off for me to be in the NBA, but it doesn’t stop there.”

When he found out that he had been traded to the Orlando Magic last Thursday, along with point guards Doron Lamb and Beno Udrih, Harris first called his father to let him in on the news. The two shared excitement because the trade to Orlando designated a fresh start for him and an opportunity to get more consistent playing time with the Magic.

Harris has wasted no time in taking advantage of his opportunity in Orlando, twice leading the team in scoring in his three games with the Magic so far. He had 16 points in Tuesday’s stirring victory in Philadelphia and he was the lone bright spot in Wednesday’s loss to Sacramento with 23 points. Incredibly, he has made 21-of-31 shots so far by relentlessly attacking the rim.

The 6-foot-8, 226-pound Harris said that while he was initially stunned by the news that he had been traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Magic, he couldn’t be happier about being in Orlando. And, of course, his dad was there to affirm to him the positives of being traded to a Magic team that is built around promising young players.

“When (Torrel) heard the news that I was coming to Orlando he was pretty excited because he knows this business. He knew the opportunity that I had here and what was at stake here for me,” Harris said. “He still plays an important part in my life. He’s like my second agent. He’s always giving me feedback and keeping me on my toes. He’s not my first (agent). He might think he is, but he isn’t.”

For Harris, this foray into the NBA is clearly a family affair. While his father takes an active role in his on-court performance, his mother often tends to his duties off the court. Harris has already approached the Magic about having his mother help coordinate his appearances in the Central Florida community while representing the Magic.

In Milwaukee, Harris was one of the Bucks’ most active players in the community. He made appearances at a Boys and Girls Club, signed autographs for fans at an appearance at a grocery store and met with youth “Super Readers” at a local library. It’s that kind of work that Harris said he hopes to continue doing in Orlando for years to come.

Magic Head Coach Jacque Vaughn has already become a big fan of Harris’ because of his versatility and desire to come into games with an aggressive nature. Because of his rare combination of size and lateral quickness, Harris can play both small forward and power forward and Vaughn believes the “tweener” label attached to Harris early on is a misnomer.

“Tobias gives us the ability to guard multiple positions and create mismatches on the other end,” Vaughn said. “We’ve already seen frequently Tobias’ ability to grab the rebound and show the ability to push the ball up the floor himself. It allows us to increase our pace, which is good for us.”

Harris’ success in Orlando could ultimately come down to how he meshes with promising small forward Maurice Harkless. Their length and versatility allow the Magic to play the kind of free-flowing game that Vaughn likes, where traditional position lines are blurred. Already the duo has built some chemistry because they have known each other for years – with Harkless being from Queens, New York, and Harris growing up on Long Island in New York.

“Tobias was always a hard worker and he was always in the gym,” Harkless remembered of Harris. “We worked out with the same trainers and every time I was at the gym, I would see him there. He’s a hard-working kid and I can’t wait to work with him more here.”

Added Harris: “I knew (Harkless) about in the 10th grade. When he was coming up he was under the radar and by his senior year (of high school) he was still under the radar. He was ranked 100-something (nationally), but I always knew Mo was going to be good. At St. John’s, he blew up that year and he’s a great player on the Magic now.”

Harris said he’s patterned his game after a couple of great players – Gervin and Carmelo Anthony, who coincidentally also happens to be Harkless’ favorite player. While working out as a child with his father, Gervin would give Tobias advice. The two worked out together after his one season at Tennessee and before the NBA Draft when the Bucks made him the 16th pick of the 2011 Draft. And it’s Anthony whom Harris compares himself too because of his ability to play multiple positions and keep the pressure on the defense with his attacking nature.

“I look at a guy like Carmelo Anthony with the size and skills that he has and I try to mimic my game after him a little bit,” Harris said. “I just want to try to improve my game. You are only going to be as good as you work. You’re not going to be the next somebody else (unless you work).”

As for his jersey number with the Magic, Harris chose No. 12 – the same number worn the previous eight seasons by the departed Dwight Howard. Whereas Howard was often known as “D-12” in Orlando, some Magic fans have already taken to calling Harris, “T-12.” But in all actuality, Harris said choosing No. 12 had nothing at all with trying to fill Howard’s enormous shoes.

He’s worn No. 12 since his senior year of high school in honor of former AAU teammate and close friend, Morgan Childs, who died of a rare blood disease. Harris wore No. 12 at Tennessee, but couldn’t do so as a rookie in Milwaukee because Luc Mbah A Moute already owned the number. When he was traded to Orlando, he requested No. 12 and didn’t pause just because Howard had worn the number previously. That, in itself, says a thing or two about the swagger and strong beliefs that Harris has.

“I know that was Dwight Howard’s old number, but that’s the number that I chose,”

Harris said brazenly. “I know there are a lot of expectations with that number and I’m happy to take on those expectations.”

As for his father, Harris said he’s gotten good feedback from his father so far about his play in Orlando. The two talked often in Milwaukee when he wasn’t playing and his father convinced him to keep working and that his time would eventually come. That opportunity has come now in Orlando, and Harris is eager to take advantage of it.

“My dad is just really happy to see me out there playing again,” Harris said. “My dad has been impressed by the fan base that we have here in Orlando and how the entire organization is run first class. … I was pretty down in Milwaukee, but my dad always told me that they’re not paying you right now to play, but they are paying you to stay ready to play. That’s what I love to do and I continued to work and got better. Now, this opportunity has come in Orlando and I’m playing and that time I spent staying ready is paying off for me.”

The winning ticket is randomly drawn in the fourth quarter at section 113.
