Time to take Action!

20130424-221316.jpg

20130424-221524.jpg

Dear Brazilian friends, good afternoon. It was a pleasure to spend time with all of you at the Breakfast and/or Business After Hours of the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce. I encourage you to join me to call Florida House and Senate to pass a sales tax rebate legislation that will help us to build a new soccer stadium and compete to obtain a Major League Soccer franchise. Please, read the letter below.

Obrigado!

Luis M.

Mayor Dyer and the City of Orlando are working hard to secure a Major League Soccer franchise for Florida. Opportunities to add a top tier professional sports franchise to the state are very rare, and cities from across the country are competing with Florida right now for the economic investment and exciting quality-of-life amenity that a professional sports franchise can offer.

Due to the rapid growth in soccer’s popularity, MLS has publically announced expansion of their league with a desire to have a team located in Orlando. MLS’s possible expansion into Florida will depend on the selected cities being able to build soccer-ready stadiums for their expansion team. To help fund a soccer-ready stadium, the City is seeking legislation from the State of Florida that would provide a sales tax rebate for the stadium. This funding is no different than what is currently offered to all other major league sports teams in Florida.

There are only seven days left in the 2013 session in Tallahassee, but legislation to give MLS equal standing with the other professional sports leagues in Florida is currently stalled in the Florida House of Representatives.

If legislation does not get passed this year it is likely MLS will choose to locate their expansion team in Atlanta rather than in Orlando. This means Orlando and the entire State of Florida will lose the opportunity to create new jobs, generate additional international travel, especially from Brazil, and highlight Florida to the millions of international fans that make soccer the most popular sport in the world.

We need YOU, along with your co-workers, friends and family, to help break through the logjam. Below is information on how to contact Speaker Weatherford’s office along with additional background on the impact Major League Soccer would have here in Orlando and across our region and state.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP – PLEASE TAKE THIS ACTION NOW OR FIRST THING TOMORROW!

Please call and email House Speaker Will Weatherford and Senate President Don Gaetz’s office using the number and email link below

Speaker Weatherford

Senate President Gaetz

WHY MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER?
In the past decade, Major League Soccer (MLS) has quickly surpassed other professional sports in popularity, boasting higher attendance than both the NBA and NHL – and surprisingly MLS doesn’t have any teams in the Southeast region of the country.
Orlando and Florida are competing for an expansion team with cities like New York, Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Minneapolis.
Flavio Augusto da Silva, a Brazilian businessman, recently acquired the majority ownership interest in Orlando City Soccer and is looking to bring thousands of international soccer fans and their economic impact to Central Florida’s front door. This also positions Orlando to become the U.S. soccer destination for all Latino soccer fans.
The hospitality industry remains the backbone of Central Florida’s economy and international travel is critical to ensuring the economic growth of Central Florida. Take for example, in 2009, when TAM airlines added a direct flight from Saó Paulo, Brazil to Orlando, the Mall at Millenia and the Prime Outlet Malls immediately saw double digit increases in sales.
We have the rare opportunity for a second major league professional sports franchise to call Orlando home and if we don’t seize this opportunity now we could lose it forever.

ABOUT THE LEGISLATION:
The primary bill being discussed is Senate Bill 306, relating to economic development – though other bills in both chambers propose various development incentives for professional sports development in Florida.
The legislation would treat MLS like all other professional sports leagues for purposes of a sales tax rebate to help finance the construction of a soccer-specific stadium in downtown Orlando.
The sales tax rebate comes from new sales tax revenues generated by the new stadium – it does not redirect existing sales tax revenues.
The legislation being proposed adds new accountability measures to the existing rebate program.
This new legislation ensures that the economic activity promised is actually achieved.

SOLAR BEARS HELP LAUNCH HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY LEAGUE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

League Promotes Growth and Awareness of Hockey in Community

Orlando, FL – The Orlando Solar Bears announced today that they have partnered with the Central Florida High School Hockey League (CFHSHL) in promoting and developing high school hockey in the Central Florida. The student-athletes playing in the CFHSHL will register with USA Hockey and will follow its rules.

“The Central Florida High School Hockey League Board of Directors and Coaches are very excited to partner with the Orlando Solar Bears,” said Julio Guerra, President of the CFHSHL. “The relationship aligns the goals of both organizations by expanding the great sport of ice hockey in our community. CFHSHL’s Inaugural 2013 season will see seven (7) regional teams and over 100 student-athletes High School Hockeycompeting from Seminole, Orange, Brevard, Volusia, Osceola, Lake, Duval and other counties. We anticipate rapid growth and are grateful to have the Solar Bears involvement and support.”

To aid new and prospective players with the initial start-up expenses, the Central Florida High School Hockey League made the entry fee reasonable, and will provide equipment swaps and inexpensive skills clinics. The Solar Bears are providing jerseys and socks for the teams. The Orange and Seminole County jerseys will sport the CFHSHL logo crest with the Solar Bears logo on the upper right chest. The league continues the growth of high school hockey in Florida by establishing the Solar Bears Conference to join with South Florida‘s Panthers Conference and the Lightning Conference in Tampa Bay. The majority of the games will be played at the Solar Bears practice facility, the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den in Orlando, and the seven teams in the conference will compete for the Solar Bears Championship Cup. The Championship Game is scheduled to be played on Saturday, June 22.

“We have a long list of community based goals and objectives, with the growth of youth hockey right there at the top of that list,” said Solar Bears Managing Partner, Jason Siegel.  “Our involvement and sponsorship of High School Hockey along with our participation in youth ‘house leagues’ at RDV, SpaceCoast, and Daytona represents another step toward achieving those goals. Youth hockey participation has grown incrementally this past season since the Solar Bears first took the ice back in October of 2012 and this League will provide yet another outlet to showcase the talent of these high school-aged student-athletes.”

The CFHSHL completed a “pilot” season last year featuring 75 high school students residing in five different counties surrounding Orlando. This number is expected to grow to over 100 participants this year, with the eventual goal to see each high school have the ability to field a team exclusively made up of their own students. In turn this will increase the awareness, participation, and accessibility of hockey in Central Florida.

Student-athletes from 38 different High Schools will skate in the CFHSHL: Apopka, Atlantic, Berkshire, Bishop Kenny, Boone, Connections Academy, Crooms, DeLand, Deltona Christian, Dr. Phillips, East Ridge, Eustis, Father Lopez, Fleming Island, FLVS, Freedom, Hagerty, Lake Brantley, Lake Highland Prep, Lake Mary, Lake Nona, Lyman, Mainland, Mandarin, Monteverde Academy, Oviedo, Pace Brantley, Phantom Trail, Seminole, Seminole Virtual, Spruce Creek, St. Cloud, Timber Creek, University, Weikva, West Orange, Winter Park, and Yulee High.

The Orlando Solar Bears, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild and Des Moines, Iowa, AHL, play all of their home games at the 2012 Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal Sports Facility of the Year, the Amway Center.

Montverde Grad Oumar Diakhite Joins Pro-Team Lions For 2013

U23s standout to retain amateur status while gaining experience with pro team

Orlando, Fla.Orlando City SC announced Friday that Defender Oumar Diakhite will join the Lions for the 2013 season under a USL Amateur Player agreement. The Orlando City U23s standout has been training and playing for the pro squad throughout the 2013 preseason and will earn an opportunity to gain more experience by spending minutes with the pro team while also retaining his eligibility for the U23s.

“It’s a dream come true and I’m very happy to be a part of the team,” said Diakhite. “It’s my first contract, so I think this’ll help me in many ways in my development. The U23s and Montverde prepared me, and I’m excited for the opportunity.”

Diakhite, a native of Dakar, Senegal, was a key piece on the Orlando backline during the 2012 PDL season.  The defender played 15 out of a possible 16 matches for the U23s, totaling 1,350 minutes played in 2012 – good for second best on the squad. Along with his defensive prowess, Diakhite scored four goals in the team’s run toward obtaining the Southern Conference Championship. He was named to the 2012 PDL All-Southern Conference team for his efforts, catching the eye of Orlando Head Coach Adrian Heath in the process.

“Oumar is just 19 years old and has bags of potential,” Heath said. “He’s big, strong and athletic and has all the tools to become a great player.  We are giving him that opportunity to grow.”

The defender has played in multiple matches throughout the 2013 preseason, including starts against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the first leg of the I-4 Derby on March 9 and in Orlando’s 7-0 win over Stetson University in the club’s collegiate friendly series.

Diakhite attended high school powerhouse Montverde Academy under Head Coach Mike Potermpa in 2011-12 where he was part of the National Championship team. He was named to the 2012 Berkeley Prep Invitational All-Tournament Team and was a Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament First Team All Tournament selection.

Coming out of Montverde, the Senegal native was named to the Orlando Sentinel All-Central Florida squad. Diakhite will be with the team as they kick off the 2013 USL PRO regular season on the road Sunday against expansion franchise Phoenix FC in Tempe, Ariz. Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. EST. For more information, visit Orlandocitysoccer.com.

Jameer Nelson Wins 2012-13 Rich & Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award

By John Denton, OrlandoMagic.com

Jameer Nelson Community Enrichment Award 2013_M149273When he had the chance to leave last summer via free agency, Jameer Nelson chose to stay in Orlando with the Magic. Nelson said not only could he not envision himself playing in another uniform, but he also didn’t want to leave a Magic fan base that has supported him for nine seasons

Nelson’s loyalty to the Magic and his commitment to the Orlando community were rewarded on Saturday night when he was named the winner of the 2012-13 Rich and Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award at the 23rdannual Orlando Magic Youth Foundation Black Tie & Tennies Gala presented by FAIRWINDS Credit Union.

The OMYF honors a player who has dedicated his efforts off the court for the purpose of enhancing other’s lives. A panel of external representatives selected Nelson as the winner. In addition to receiving the award, Nelson was granted $50,000 from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation to donate to the charity of his choice.

“It’s definitely an honor and it says a lot about what we’re about as an organization and a team and who Mr. (Rich) DeVos is as a person and what he does for the community,” Nelson said as he manned a photo booth along with fans during the gala.

It was the second time that Nelson has been a finalist for the award. Glen “Big Baby” Davis was also a finalist for Saturday night’s award. Legendary Magic owner Rich DeVos and Chairman Dan DeVos were on hand to present the Community Enrichment Award to Nelson. Rich DeVos told the crowd the story of how he and his wife wanted to reward a Magic player for giving back and how they received special permission from the NBA league office to be able to award the $50,000 prize for players to award to their charities.

The Black Tie and Tennies Gala is the biggest fundraiser for the OMYF. For a third straight year the OMYF gave out $1 million to 17 local nonprofit organizations throughout Central Florida.

Every dollar raised on Saturday night receives a 50-cent match through the McCormick Foundation Fund. Magic CEO Alex Martins put the hard sell on the 700 people at the event, coaxing them to use their smart phones to donate to the cause and ultimately $30,000 was raised on the spot. Another $42,500 was raised by auctioning off items such as dinner with Davis, a trip to the 2014 NBA All-Star Game, a trip to the ESPN ESPY award, a five-night stay in Paris for the LeCordon Blue Culinary Academy and four-night stay at Royal St. Andrews to play golf.

Other silent auctions and donations made the night a smashing success for the OMYF. Martins stressed that the Magic’s mission is to be champions on and off the court while striving to make a difference in people’s lives.

“The Orlando Magic are built to be a cornerstone of this community,” Martins said. “When the team succeeds, this community succeeds. And when a community succeeds, we are all winners. This philosophy permeates the entire organization, especially through our players. Our players understand the responsibility that they have not only on the court, but off. They know how many children look to them as role models and how important it is to be stewards of this great community.”

Nelson is the longest-tenured Magic player on the roster, spending his entire nine-year career in Orlando. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in assists (2,999). In 580 career games with the Magic, he has averaged 12.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a game. This season, he’s averaging 14.7 points – his highest total in four seasons – and 7.3 assists – the most of his career.

Nelson has consistently volunteered his time off the court and to the Central Florida community supporting the initiatives of the Magic’s community relations department, the OMYF and the NBA. Highlights of his community involvement for the 2012-13 season include:

  • ·         Helped feed more than 600 homeless men, women and children at the Magic’s Thanksgiving breakfast at the Coalition for the Homeless.
  • ·         Hosted a surprise event and provided holiday gifts for two local families of six affiliated with OCPS Homeless Division. Gifts for each family included laptops, cell phones, Nintendo DS system, games, toys, and gift cards for both families to purchase essential needs.
  • ·         Participated in pregame meet n’ greets with terminally ill children.
  • ·         Works with After School All-Stars in promoting comprehensive after school programs which assist disadvantaged youth in the community.
  • ·         Participated in the Player Ticket Program by purchasing over 600 tickets for children at Elevate Orlando to attend Magic home games.

“This is especially for the fans who see who we are as people,” Nelson said of winning the Community Enrichment Award. “When we go into the community for events, it’s great. It’s not about the money or anything; it’s more about the time and doing things in this community as people. Being able to do things for people it just an extra incentive for us.”

Past winners of the award include Nick Anderson (1995-1996), Penny Hardaway (1996-1997), Darrell Armstrong (1997-1998, 1999-2000), Grant Hill (2000-2001), Monty Williams (2001-2002), Tracy McGrady (2002-2003), Pat Garrity (2003-2004), Bo Outlaw (1998-1999, 2005-2006, 2006-2007), Dwight Howard (2004-05, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12) and J.J. Orlando Magic’s Glen Davis Encourages Kids to Eat Healthy, Succeed in School

The Orlando Magic, along with Magic forward Glen Davis, encouraged students to eat healthy and raised awareness for the positive changes to Florida school lunches with a special event on March 19 at Rosemont Elementary School. Glen Davis, the Magic Dancers, STUFF the Magic Mascot and representatives from the Magic joined students during lunch at Rosemont Elementary School talking about the importance of eating healthy and exercising.

The event was part of an ongoing partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which assumed responsibility of the state’s school nutrition program in January 2012. The department works to improve the nutritional value of school meals, direct more locally-grown fresh fruits and vegetables and encourage kids to choose the healthy options available.  The department partners with teams across Florida who can carry the message that it’s important to eat right and stay active in order to compete in the classroom and on the field or court.

Duluth, GA -  The Solar Bears came back to tie the game at 1-1 and again at 2-2, but were unable to take the lead and eventually fell to the Gladiators 3-2 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Gladiators got on the board first with a late first period power play. After the puck was dumped into the Orlando end, the Gladiators forced a turnover and gave F Andy Brandt a chance to collect the loose puck. Brandt fired a shot into the top left Corbin Baldwincorner of the net at 18:04 to put Gwinnett ahead 1-0. After neither side was able to score in the middle frame, the Gladiators snapped the 1-1 tie in the third. F Doug Jones stickhandled into the slot and slid a shot past G Patrick Killeen to give Gwinnett the 2-1 lead. Duluth, GAThe Gladiators jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Solar Bears and held them off the scoresheet for the majority of the contest to eventually take a 3-1 win over the Solar Bears at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday night.

The Gladiators jumped out to an early lead 7:28 into the first period. After a Derick Martincross-ice pass was deflected away, D Cody Brookwell blasted a shot from the point that was partially blocked, but found a way to trickle over the line to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. The Gladiators increased their lead to 2-0 just 36 seconds later, when a shot from the right corner off the stick of F Justin Bowers deflected underneath the crossbar and gave Gwinnett the two goal lead going into the second period.

Exactly 5:00 into the second stanza, F Scott Arnold increased the advantage for Gwinnett. Arnold collected the puck in the neutral zone, rolled it on goal, and got his own rebound before tucking the puck into the back of net to put Gwinnett up 3-0. It was the lone goal of the frame.

The score remained 3-0 until late in the third period. With G Patrick Killeen pulled from the net for an extra attacker, a shot from D Derick Martin hit traffic in front of the Gladiators net, popped up in the air, and landed behind G Louie Domingue to put the Solar Bears on the board with 53 seconds left in the game. It would not be enough for the Solar Bears, as the Gladiators held on to take the 3-1 win over Orlando.

3 Stars: 1. L. Domingue (GWT); 2. S. Arnold (GWT); 3. C. Brookwell (GWT)
Power Plays: ORL: 0/5; GWT: 0/4

Notes:

F Scott Tanski was scratched before today’s game and is questionable for Sunday’s matchup against Gwinnett… D Derick Martin’s goal in the third period was his first of the season… F Brett Hartung earned his first professional point when he assisted on Martin’s goal… Tonight’s game marked just the third time in 11 meetings that the Solar Bears and Gladiators have seen a game decided by more than one goal… G Patrick Killeen took over for G Zoltan Hetenyi 5:00 into the second period, and Killeen stopped all 22 shots he faced for the remainder of the contest… Orlando plays one more road game before returning home to the Amway Center for five straight games.
