NBA KICKING INTO HIGH GEAR IN DAY TWO
Written BY SEAN SLACK.
Day two at the All Star events in Orlando, Fl started early press conferences were served for breakfast. The head of USA basketball Jerry Colangelo started off by announcing the upcoming grueling summer schedule for the USA Men and Women’s Olympic teams. Games over the summer include contests against the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Argentina, and the highlighted gold medal re-match against Spain. The rematch happens to be on the 20th anniversary of the USA “Dream Team” and will be played in Barcelona.
Mr. Colangelo also unveiled the new uniforms for the Olympic teams which have been changed for the first time in many years. They have produced a “modern, sleek” logo for 2012. Mr. Coloangelo was joined by the president of the Spanish basketball federation Jose Luiz Saez, Memphis Grizzlies first time All Star Marc Gasol, and the head of Manchester City Council in England Nick Fairlahm. We interviewed Fairlahm and Gasol after the conference as well.
Later on in the morning, the Hall of Fame announced some controversial changes to their voting policies for 2013 including allowing fan voting into the mix for the first time. A distinguished gathering of former greats and Hall of Fame players including Chris Mullin, David Robinson, George Gervin, Dominique Wilkins and many others sat on stage as members of the 2011 class were revealed. It was a touching moment also for Orlando fans as the VP of the Orlando Magic and architect of the team coming to Orlando in 1986, Pat Wiliams was inducted. Mr. Williams is currently battling cancer, and we wish the best for him and his family of 19 children.
Towards the end of the ceremony, some of the potential 2012 class were announced including former Indiana Pacers great Reggie Miller and Philadelphia Sixers former player and Oklahoma City assistant coach Maurice Cheeks.
Finally, we were ushered into another hall where all of the participants for All Star Saturday Night, and the East and West All Star teams were made available. We took plenty of pictures for our upcoming special edition issue of fantastic NBA players including Dwight Howard, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Deron Williams, Paul Pierce, reigning MVP Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, Ruseel Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, and a host of other players. The hall was filled with journalists and press from all over the globe, and we were thrilled to be a part of it. Stay tuned as more will coming from the 2012 All Star festivities
