On Friday, the City of Orlando will host the One Less Car, One More Park event where six local design firms will temporarily transform eight on-street metered parking spaces into re-imagined parks and green spaces to show the positive impacts of leaving vehicles at home and walking, biking, carpooling or using public transit to commute.
As part of the event, Orlando Mayor Dyer is encouraging residents and employees to commute to work using an alternative mode of transportation this Friday. Not only do alternate travel modes reduce the need to use land for parking, but it also saves residents money and reduces congestion and pollution.
“Due to lack of transportation options, historically Central Floridians have relied on cars to travel, but with our region’s focus on strategically developing our transportation infrastructure, residents will not have to rely solely on vehicles anymore” said Mayor Dyer. “The One Less Car, One More Park event will visually demonstrate the benefits of mass transit and will hopefully encourage our community to change their transportation behaviors.”
Throughout the day, attendees will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite re-imagined parking space and learn more about local transit options. Mayor Dyer will present the winning design firm with a trophy made from a recycled parking meter.
The One Less Car, One More Park event is part of Green Works Orlando, the City’s sustainability initiative to engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”
To engage more residents in the City’s sustainability efforts, Orlando has launched GreenWorksOrlando.com. This interactive forum allows Orlando residents to provide feedback and further the ideas of other residents as to how to continue to make Orlando a more sustainable and livable community. These suggestions will be used as the foundation for Orlando’s future sustainability plans.
