Organization Continues Community Involvement
On March 28th, players and staff volunteered to pass out hot dogs, condiments, and beverages at the Christian Service Center’s Annual Street Celebration. The Center served its 3,750,000th meal at Daily Bread during the event, which also featured free music, face painting, popcorn, and cotton candy.
Saturday, April 13, saw the Solar Bears take part in two events in the Orlando area. Solar Bears staff members brought the Slap Shot Cage to the 20th year of WJRR’s Earthday Birthday concert at Tinker Field. Later that evening, staff and management participated in American Cancer Society‘s Cattle Baron’s Ball at the Rosen Shingle Creek. Over $400,000 was raised to help the ongoing pursuit of a cure for cancer.
On April 16, the Orlando Solar Bears sponsored the Central Florida Council of Boy Scouts of America’s Golden Eagle Dinner at the Amway Center. The founder of the Orlando Magic, Jimmy Hewitt, was honored in front of over 1,100 community leaders including Dinner Chairman Alex Martins and Co-Chairs Sheriff Jerry Demings, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs. The fundraising dinner brought in over $889,000 to support Scouting throughout Central Florida which in turn serves over 25,000 Central Florida families.
The Solar Bears took part in another dinner on April 19 as management and staff attended the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida’s Celebrate the Children Dinner and Auction. More than 1,000 community members from over 200 companies turned out for the dinner which raised over $600,000 to directly benefit at-risk children in the Central Florida community and enhance core youth development programs at their 29 Clubs.
Less than two weeks ago, on May 11, Solar Bears defenseman Ed Levens walked the runway as part of Runway to Hope’s Spring Fashion Soiree for children fighting cancer. USA Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas and Twilight Saga actress Ashley Greene hosted the fashion show featuring more than 60 children ages 2-18 who are currently battling or have overcome their cancer escorted by local celebrities.
Last week, on May 16, the Solar Bears made a visit to the Orlando VA Medical Hospital. Shades donned his special Solar Bears Camo jersey while visiting patients and hanging out with the VA Hospital staff.
The Orlando Solar Bears, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild and AHL’s Iowa Wild, play all of their home games at the 2012 Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal Sports Facility of the Year, the Amway Center.
