LAKE MARY CAPTURES 2014 CFHSHL SOLAR BEARS CUP Thrilling Contest Ended in Double Overtime, Lake Mary Repeats as Champions


 

Lake Mary High School won their second consecutive Central Florida High School Hockey League (CFHSHL) championship on Saturday, June 21, when they captured the Solar Bears Cup with a 6-5 double overtime win over Orange County. Lake Mary changed their name from Seminole North prior to the start of the 2014 CFHSHL season.Lake Mary vs. Orange County

Lake Mary and Orange County skated to a 2-2 tie after the first period. All four  goals in the period were scored on special teams. Lake Mary grabbed a 4-3 lead heading into the second before scoring midway through the third to take a 5-3 advantage. Orange County fought back, first cutting the score to 5-4 with under five minutes to play and then evening the score at 5-5 with 1:30 to play. After neither side was able to tally in the first overtime, defenseman Johnny Brockman finished off a breakaway to give Lake Mary the 6-5 double overtime victory.

Despite the Internet, cell phones, email and modern communications, every year whole regions find themselves in the dark. Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate. In these cases, the one consistent service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio.

These radio operators, often called “hams” provide backup communications for everything from the American Red Cross to FEMA and even for the International Space Station. Orlando area “hams” will join with thousands of other Amateur Radio operators showing their emergency capabilities this weekend. Continue reading ““Who ya’ gonna call?
